Cannabis Review: Sonora by Broken Coast Cannabis

ALL BAG APPEAL, BAD SMOKE

This is my seventh review of a Broken Coast Cannabis product and started the evaluation on April 25th 2020. This licensed producer is based in Duncan, British Columbia and provides products for the medical and retail market. Sonora is named after an island in British Columbia, and while I thought this was Stargazer by its actual cultivar name it’s actually called stargazer named by their team who bred this with Star killer crossed with an unknown cultivar, my guess it’s Northern Lights Haze (their Galiano).

Cannabinoid Content and Terpenes

THC content was a bit different on this container compared to previous reviews, it showed 245 mg/g of THC. For those who prefer this in percent form, this would be 24.5 % THC. This was due to a labeling change in regulations which originally was for pre-rolls and has moved onto whole flower. Noted was zero mg of CBD.

As a previous medical patient of Broken Coast I was able to log onto the website and see the terpene data for Sonora. While these numbers will vary to each grow what was listed as the dominant terpene was Caryophyllene with a value of 0.54%, Limonene at 0.24% and Terpineol at 0.10%. A few others were noted as well below a value of 0.10%, Myrcene and alpha and beta-Pinene. Total measured terpenes showed 1.77%.

Price, Shipping and Pack Dates

The price was $13.71 per gram with taxes on the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) website for a container with 3.5 grams. Shipping was free with Canada Post or 3-day delivery due to the current COVID-19 outbreak, otherwise it would’ve been $5 plus tax. This is also sold on the medical side with a lower THC amount at the time of this writing and would cost me $12.81 per gram with tax if you live in Ontario, the excise tax varies on where you live and is the result of different prices on the medical side with Broken Coast.

This was packaged on October 31st 2019 and was purchased on April 17th 2020. I opened the container on April 25th which means this was packaged for 178 days before consumption. Be aware that the harvest date remains unknown.

Smell, Taste and Appearance

Instantly reminded me of Galiano (Northern Lights Haze) by the same grower with citrus and earthy smells and hints of pine after vaping it. OCS described the aromas as fruity-gas, and I’d agree there was some fuel but the aromas were pretty underwhelming, especially for a Broken Coast product.

Moisture content was good and didn’t immediately require the use of a humidity pack, but the next day I went to open the container and noticed the buds were a bit dry so I threw a Boveda in the jar and waited about 6 hours. Things were in better shape upon returning.

Appearances were top notch, full of trichomes coated the flower and a mix of opaque and clear trichome heads intact.

Consumption Methods

With every review I’ve ever done I try a minimum of six temperatures, each are individual sessions to see how long each lasts. This may vary by each device and the one used here was the Mighty vaporizer.

180 degrees Celsius (356F) was the best with each session lasting about eight minutes using around 0.25 grams of cannabis providing a good amount of vapour with the best flavour. At higher temperatures flavour was diminished quickly but provided lots of vapour.

170C (338F) – 11 minutes – Light vapour, light taste
175C (347F) – 9 minutes
180C (356F) – 8 minutes – Best flavour
185C (365F) – 7 minutes
190C (374F) – 7 minutes – Increased vapour, less flavourful
195C (383F) – 6 minutes

Rolled into a gram and smoked as a joint I found the ash was really dark while smoking, it wasn’t great at all and needed to relight the joint twice. I preferred this in the vapourizer like most cultivars.

Subjective Effects

Despite this one having a high amount of THC I barely felt much, if someone told me this was 15% THC I’d likely agree with them. It barely worked for my muscle and joint pains and the only time I felt something worthwhile is when I smoked it. Some would say my tolerance has gone up possibly, but over the last few weeks I’ve been consuming mostly 15-18% THC rated flower and less grams than my usual per day. Duration of effects, for what they were I’d say was around 90 minutes and had no issue using this throughout the day, although I expected this to be an evening affair.

Final Thoughts

I won’t be buying this again and likely won’t be buying another Broken Coast whole flower product for a while. When I purchased this it was recently added to the OCS website and expected something not nearing 6 months old. I blame the age of the product for its lackluster offering. All bag appeal with a bad smoke and effect.
