Cannabis: Island Pink Head by Dunn Cannabis

SWEET AND SAVORY

Purchased off the Shelter Market website for medical patients was 3.5 grams of Island Pink Head, a cross of Island Pink and Screwhead by a grower called Dunn Cannabis located in Abbotsford, British Columbia, just outside of the Vancouver area. The production team is from the legacy market with decades of experience so I had expectations for a high quality flower.

Island Pink Head is my first write up of a Dunn Cannabis product and from what I found online about their cultivation methods is that they use High Sodium bulbs for light, while the plant is grown in soil and hand-watered. The flower is dried slowly in a flash of cold air at 50% humidity and trimmed by hand.

Cannabinoid Content and Terpenes

THC content was 200.06 mg per gram (20.01%) THC as labeled. There was a minimal amount of CBD with less than <1%.

Terpene and other cannabinoid data on Shelter Market’s website listed the Certificate of Analysis (COA) with the following details showing Caryophyllene (0.43%) and Myrcene (0.41%) were competing dominant terpenes and a close third with Limonene (0.31%). Other terpenes (0.7%) made up the rest of the profile for the total amount of terpenes at 1.86%.

Price, Shipping and Pack Dates

The price I paid near the end of November of 2020 was $8 per gram plus taxes for a bag with 3.5 grams, costing a total of $31.64 after tax during the Black Friday sale on Shelter Market’s website. The non-sale price is $45.21 for the same size with tax, so a savings of $13.57. Cheaper options exist at the time for larger sizes up to 28 grams. If you wanted this on the retail side it’s priced at $56.95 with tax on the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) for a 3.5 gram package under the Artisan Batch branding in a jar.

Shipping was free with Canada Post since my total order was over $99, otherwise a fee of $15 + tax would apply. The Purolator option was also available but had a fee regardless of the total cost of the order.

Lot # 20-P82 was packaged on November 23rd 2020 and was purchased on November 27th 2020. I received the package four days later and opened it on February 15th 2021, which means this was packaged for 85 days before I began consuming it, but from packaging to arrival was about 11 days. Keep in mind, pack dates are not harvest dates but I had no concerns that this was old cannabis by any means, but did notice that the same lot is being sold as of the date of issuing this write up.

Smell, Taste and Appearance

Just like my previous write up this package was opened much later after arrival so I was prepared for a possible faint scent upon opening, but nearly 90 days out it still smelled great and very noticeable after opening the package. Initial notes of a sweet cream with hints of a gassy savory lemon.

Taking the cannabis out of the mylar bag (which I loathe) I noticed the buds were pretty dense and sugar coated in trichomes, a bit on the dry side but didn’t need a Boveda humidity pack, at least not right away. I did use one 62% humidity pack a couple days after opening as I found there was little moisture after being contained in a Cvault I use for storage between use, within 12 hours or so there was a considerable balance of moisture which I think is optimal.

Appearances showed a great amount of trichomes covering each bud in frosty greens with brownish orange pistils. As noted this is a hand-trimmed flower, which looks like it was manicured to look uniformly and my guess with an electric hand tool to clean it up. This was more evident in the macro shot above which looks absolutely beautiful showing a blanket of trichomes however the trichome heads seem to be zipped off in surface areas, whereas shown in the inner areas.

Consumption Methods

Since I was without my Mighty vaporizer during the end of summer for two months for a warranty repair, I began using my Pax 2 again alongside the Mighty when it returned. I found both devices using temperatures around 193C (380F) the best in terms of vapour production and keeping a good flavour profile over an 8 minute session.

In joint form the ash was grey, a little bit on the lighter side and the smoke was smooth and easy to inhale. It was a very enjoyable experience.

Subjective Effects

Sedating, relaxed but still functional with general relief from chronic muscle pains. I preferred it in the evening over any other time of day and noticed the duration of effects lasted around 90 minutes in a 0.25g vape session or 3 hours when smoking a gram in joint form.

Final Thoughts

It was a good experience that was worthwhile at the price I paid on Shelter Market’s medical website, but would be hesitating to spend the full retail cost of $16.27 a gram with tax in Ontario. If I saw full trichome heads intact where they should be, it would be an easier call to say it was near perfect. That being said I plan on buying from Dunn Cannabis again, but i’ll see what another cultivar is like and if I’m seeing the same results.

Cannabis: Jean Guy by 7ACRES

ONE OF MY FAVOURITE DAYTIME CULTIVARS

Jean Guy has been a favourite of mine for daytime use after trying it in June of 2019, and so I decided to take another look at it again a year later in September 2020. The only thing I noticed was the price was lower at a much more affordable cost of $8.76/gram with taxes from the Ontario Cannabis Store.

I’ll simply say the opinion still stands. Brief notes have been updated to reflect from the time when I first tried it and a year later where things stand. From the relief of daytime stress or needing energy to get the day going, this was the one for me.

Cannabinoid Content and Terpenes

Purchased off the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) the THC range shown on the website was 13.5 to 21%, when the order arrived the THC content shown on the container was 17.87% and <0.02% CBD. This would be considered above average in terms of THC content. The second time I ordered this the THC was 18.97% in September 2020, a bit higher than in 2019.

Terpene data I’ve found via PureSinse medical under the Supreme Cannabis label in 2019 was that myrcene was the dominant terpene at 0.69%. The secondary terpene was terpinolene at 0.44%. Smaller amounts of others were noted as well, ocimene 0.19%, pinene 0.17% and surprisingly limonene was only at 0.12% despite the strong lemon aromas. There’s many other terpenes noted at lower amounts. Keep in mind that from harvest to harvest this data will vary, but gives a brief idea of what it may consist of.

Price, Shipping and Pack Dates

The first time I tried 7ACRES Jean Guy the price was $13.03 per gram including tax when I purchased 3.5 grams off OCS in mid-September of 2019, and shortly after I was advised the cost went up to $14.49 per gram. On my order about a year later the price per gram was $8.76 with tax and free shipping via OCS, much lower than when I first tried 7ACRES Jean Guy in 2019, however the second time around was for 7 grams not 3.5, but that price was even lower today at $9.41 per gram for a 3.5 gram container.

Package date was June 27 2019. Initial purchase was September 17 2019 with my other 7ACRES products and consumed September 22, 2019. The days between packaging and opening the container, 88 days. On my order around a year later there was about a month from packaging to sale. While the date of packaging sounds good, the harvest date remains unknown.

Smell, Taste and Appearance

Sweet lemon and earthy aromas were easily identified after opening the container. Bud size varied, there was a single large bud weighing just over a gram, a handful of medium sized ones and a couple tiny pieces. All the buds were dense and no humidity pack was needed to restore the balance.

Consumption Methods

With every write up I’ve ever done I try a minimum of six temperatures, each are individual sessions to see how long each lasts at a set fixed temperature. This may vary by each device and the one used here was the Mighty vaporizer.

Noted below I found 175 degrees Celsius (347F) the best for full flavour with each session lasting about eight minutes using around 0.25 grams of cannabis. Other temperatures worked fine though and if you like lots of vapour then 190C (374F) might be your ideal with a session lasting about seven minutes.

170C (338F) – 8 minutes
175C (347F) – 8 minutes – Best
180C (356F) – 8 minutes
185C (365F) – 7 minutes
190C (374F) – 7 minutes – Increased vapour
195C (383F) – 6 minutes

Subjective Effects

I loved the way it made me feel energized, upbeat and happy. My creative thinking cap was on all while being comfortable and providing great pain relief. I did feel slightly dreamy at higher doses in a single session (0.75> grams) but still capable of having a conversation. I found the best time to consume was in the daytime or during social settings. Duration of effects lasted 90 to 120  minutes.

Final Thoughts

Jean Guy by 7ACRES is by far my favourite cultivar to date for daytime use and a must try for those buying from the retail market seeking similar experiences. The price was a reason why I didn’t buy it often from the retail side in October 2019 and was saved for special occasions, but since the price has come down from my initial look last year, it is something I’ll be buying more regularly as the quality is more affordable.

Cannabis: Bubba Kush by Whistler Cannabis (WMMC)

MUSKY ARMY SURPLUS STORE

This is my first write up of a Whistler Medical Marijuana Corporation (WMMC) cannabis product, which is also sold under the Whistler Cannabis Company label on the retail side. Grown in beautiful British Columbia in a place called Whistler known for winter sport is where this cannabis was grown.

All their cannabis grown at WMMC is certified organic by the FVOPA (Fraser Valley Organic Producers Association) and is compliant with the Canadian Organic Standards. Also to note, this particular cultivar by WMMC hasn’t been irradiated by any means and if it has it would show a plus (+) symbol beside the name of the cultivar, only two for sale as of this writing use irradiation and of which use e-beam sterilization. Much of the regulated Canadian cannabis market uses e-beam or gamma for sterilization, so it’s nice to see a licensed producer not using it entirely to compare and see if there’s any noticeable differences.

Cannabinoid Content and Terpenes

THC content was 227.4mg per gram as labeled or 22.47% THC for those who prefer that terminology, which I myself agree with more on dried cannabis. There was a minimal amount of CBD at 0.05%.

Terpene and other cannabinoid data was quite detailed on the WMMC website, listing Limonene (0.49%) as the dominant terpene with Caryophyllene (0.31%), Myrcene (0.26%) and Linalool (0.24%) with values over 0.2% and many others below that number. Total combined amount of terpenes showed a moderate amount around 1.75%.

Most licensed producers today don’t list anything else other than THC and CBD, while WMMC notes a few other cannabinoids with CBC at 0.22%, CBG at 1.47% and THCV at 0.12%, keep in mind these values will vary lot to lot and are potential amounts after heating them.

Bubba Kush, WMMC, Whistler Cannabis, VapeTheBud

Price, Shipping and Pack Dates

The price was $13 per gram plus taxes for a container with 5 grams, costing a total of $73.45 after tax in Ontario. Shipping was free with Canada Post since my first order of the month is free, after that the cost will vary on the selected provider. I had the choice of Purolator at the time of shipping for free as well.

While I didn’t purchase this via the retail side, it does sell around $22 per gram with tax in a package with 3.5 grams for a total cost of $76.95.

This was packaged on May 8th 2020 and was purchased on May 12th 2020. I received the container on May 19th and opened it on May 25th, which means this was packaged for 18 days. While the date of packaging sounds good, the harvest date remains unknown.

Smell, Taste and Appearance

The smell of Bubba Kush always reminds me of an army surplus store, dank and musty earths with a slight leathery scent. This also had notes of pine and lemon to boot while using the vaporizer and tasted great.

The flower was a little bit dry and dense but still usable the same day. I decided to use a humidity pack at my expense and after a day of being sealed the buds were sticky and at my preferred level of moisture of around 62%. I believe the dryness could’ve been avoided if the jar was properly sealed, there was no induction seal or anything other than the screw cap on top. They did use some plastic around the bottle on the outer part, but thankfully WMMC has since changed this method and is now properly sealing them according to an email I got in July 2020.

The image above the section of price, shipping and pack dates shows a macro at 5x the magnification using a Laowa lens and we can see the trichome heads are intact and seems to be healthy looking. While with the image below, this is with a kenko extension tube using the same DSLR camera the trichome heads are hard to see. I sort of expected this from the manicured look of the bud.

Consumption Methods

With every write up I’ve ever done I try a minimum of six temperatures, each are individual sessions to see how long each lasts at a set fixed temperature. This may vary by each device and the one used here was the Mighty vaporizer.

Noted below I found the temperature of 185 degrees celsius (365F) the best with sessions lasting about nine minutes using around 0.25 grams of cannabis. Other temperatures worked fine, lower temperatures offered less vapour but effects felt the same, while higher temperatures offered quicker sessions and slightly reduced flavour half way through.

170C (338F) – 11 minutes
175C (347F) – 10 minutes
180C (356F) – 9 minutes
185C (365F) – 9 minutes
190C (374F) – 7 minutes
195C (383F) – 7 minutes

In joint form it was observed that the ash was light grey, with the smoke being smooth during inhalation and enjoyed this more in the rolled format than vaporization, which is very rare for me to say.

Subjective Effects

Since I’m more seasoned with cannabis I found anytime of day would be okay to consume Bubba Kush, others may prefer to use this at nighttime as the effects noticed were a heavy head high and paired nice with a movie or kicking back and relaxing while listening to music. Pain relief was decent but the acid reflux after use was an issue with me and as previously mentioned in other opinions I’m finding the terpene Limonene the cause, generally when this is a high amount it seems to cause issues for me and my acid reflux is gone when fully abstaining from said cultivar. Duration of effects lasted roughly 60 to 90 minutes.

Final Thoughts

While I enjoyed this cultivation of Bubba Kush the high limonene isn’t for me due to acid reflux being triggered, if it wasn’t for that effect on me I’d likely buy it again. The retail price makes it unaffordable and I wouldn’t pay anything more than I did at $13 plus tax on the medical side. For those thinking about buying it on the retail side at the cost at $22 with tax in Ontario and you think organic is worth the premium by all means try it, but I wouldn’t say this is worth that nor any cannabis at that price per gram.

Cannabis: Dayshift by Kingsway

LOOKS LIKE OG MELON, WELL IT IS!

This is my second review of a Kingsway cannabis product, it was labeled as Dayshift (91 Krypt OG) by the High12 company under the Kingsway brand. This is grown by Aurora Cannabis as mentioned on the label, which is based near Edmonton, AB.

As described on the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) where I purchased this, it was noted as having Captain Krypt and 91 Chemdawg lineage, which is OG Melon. Under Aurora’s medical program this is called Warwick #1 which I’ve previously wrote my thoughts on before.

Cannabinoid Content and Terpenes

THC content was 181.5mg per gram as labeled or 18.15% THC for those who prefer that terminology, which I myself agree with more on dried cannabis.

Terpene and other cannabinoid data was minimal on the Ontario Cannabis Store website and mentions five terpenes as, Humulene, Myrcene, Limonene, Linalool and Caryophyllene

Dayshift, Kingsway, Aurora, VapeTheBud

Price, Shipping and Pack Dates

The price was $8.60 per gram with taxes on the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) for a container with 3.5 grams, costing a total of $30.10. Shipping was free with Canada Post due to the current COVID-19 outbreak, otherwise it would’ve been $5 plus tax.

This was packaged on March 26th 2020 and was purchased on April 30th 2020. I received the container on May 5th and opened it on May 16th, which means this was packaged for 52 days. While the date of packaging sounds good, the harvest date remains unknown.

Appearance, Smell and Taste

Without even putting a bud into my hand I could tell by the unique smell and look of the flower that this was indeed OG Melon. It had a nice fruity, tangerine type smell and visuals showed the flower were dusted with trichomes and had an airy composure. When lightly touched the bud began to break apart due to the dryness of the buds, which varied in size but were mostly small and nothing special.

The use of a humidity pack was needed at my expense to make it more worthwhile to use and I waited two days before consuming it again as it grinded to dust initially. This wasn’t an issue after the two days of remediation.

Under the macro lens we can see a heavy blanket of trichomes, better than the Aurora review of the same product from earlier this year. Trichomes were mostly clear and my guess here is that this was harvested early, but you do see some amber ones there. Ideally I’d you’d like to see at least a mix of opaque and clear looking trichomes and here we don’t see that.

Consumption Methods

With every review I’ve ever done I try a minimum of six temperatures, each are individual sessions to see how long each lasts at a set fixed temperature. This may vary by each device and the one used here was the Mighty vaporizer.

Noted below I found 180 degrees Celsius (356F) the best with sessions lasting about seven minutes using around 0.25 grams of cannabis. Other temperatures worked fine, lower temperatures offered less vapour but effects felt the same regardless if I vaporized at my ideal 180C (356F). Higher temperatures around 190C (374F) resulted in a harsh taste.

170C (338F) – 8 minutes
175C (347F) – 8 minutes
180C (356F) – 7 minutes
185C (365F) – 6 minutes
190C (374F) – 6 minutes
195C (383F) – 5 minutes

In joint form the smoke was smooth and didn’t produce any coughing, however the ash was very dark. As usual I preferred vaporization to enjoy the flavour.

Subjective Effects

I did enjoy this cultivar from Aurora as it made me feel relaxed and was great for daydreaming, adding some creativity to my day but found repeated use led to triggering acid reflux and felt an upper tightness along with it. Laying down made the burning sensation ease and stopping the use of this particular cultivar eradicated the issue. Duration of the effects were short and lasted roughly 60 minutes

Final Thoughts

When I bought this and Nightshift by Kingsway I thought I was trying new cultivars but instead I learned ten minutes after my purchase that this was Aurora flower rebranded by a “brandhouse”, which is basically an outside company rebranding flower they bought at wholesale prices and running a marketing campaign. I do agree this is for a “dayshift” and the marketing was done right on that front, but by no means will I ever buy this again knowing what the quality is.

On social media channels others have stated this is Daily Special Sativa, sometimes it’s OG Melon and sometimes Sour Tangie, since that’s cheaper at the time of writing I’d suggest you try that if you really want this. I won’t be buying either until I hear positive changes have happened as this flower was below average.

Cannabis: Nightshift by Kingsway

L.A. CONFIDENTIAL IN DISGUISE

This is my first review of a Kingsway cannabis product, it was labeled as Nightshift (Afghan OG) by the High12 company under the Kingsway brand. This is grown by Aurora Cannabis as mentioned on the label, which is based near Edmonton, Alberta.

As described on the Ontario Cannabis Store where I purchased this it notes O.G. LA Affie and Afghani lineage, which is LA Confidential.

Cannabinoid Content and Terpenes

THC content was 164.4mg per gram as labeled or 16.44% THC for those who prefer that terminology, which I myself agree with more on dried cannabis.

Terpene and other cannabinoid data was minimal on the Ontario Cannabis Store website and mentions five terpenes as, Pinene, Myrcene, Ocimene, Guaiol and Caryophyllene.

Nightshift, Kingsway, Aurora, VapeTheBud

Price, Shipping and Pack Dates

The price was $8.60 per gram with taxes on the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) for a container with 3.5 grams, costing a total of $30.10. Shipping was free with Canada Post due to the current COVID-19 outbreak, otherwise it would’ve been $5 plus tax.

This was packaged on March 27th 2020 and was purchased on April 30th 2020. I received the container on May 5th and opened it on May 16th, which means this was packaged for 51 days. While the date of packaging sounds good, the harvest date remains unknown.

Appearance, Smell and Taste

The container’s seal was hard to peel open and required the use of a pen to break it. I often have cramps in my hands so some might not have this issue but it was really on there. Presented after opening were four buds, you could spot some yellowing in some areas but mostly green and dense with lots of brown pistils throughout. The buds were really dry and lacked moisture, the use of a humidity pack was needed at my expense and waited two days before consuming it again as it grinded to dust. This wasn’t an issue after the two days of remediation.

Smell and taste were earthy and pine and relate to the terpenes myrcene and pinene. If I didn’t know this was an Aurora product as labeled on the container I’d know it was L.A. Confidential by them as I’ve tried it countless times in the past when I posted reviews on Lift & Co. as this is Snow Dome under Aurora’s medical program.

Nightshift, Kingsway, Aurora, VapeTheBud

Consumption Methods

With every review I’ve ever done I try a minimum of six temperatures, each are individual sessions to see how long each lasts at a set fixed temperature. This may vary by each device and the one used here was the Mighty vaporizer.

My ideal temperature with this cultivar was in the range of 180 to 185 degrees Celsius (356-365F) with a session lasting around 9 minutes. At slightly higher temperatures the flavour was less noteworthy but still okay.

170C (338F) – 9 minutes
175C (347F) – 9 minutes
180C (356F) – 9 minutes
185C (365F) – 8 minutes
190C (374F) – 6 minutes
195C (383F) – 5 minutes

Rolled into a gram and smoked as a joint I found the ash was very dark and found myself relighting multiple times as it kept going out. Wasn’t a good smoke and preferred using this with the vaporizer.

Subjective Effects

The effects offered me a nice head high, I didn’t feel tired but relaxed. Slight clarity and focus, while providing good pain relief to my joints and muscles. Dry eyes were common and needed to use eye drops. Evening use is advised to individuals who don’t partake daily and duration of effects was around 90 minutes.

Final Thoughts

My guess this is for someone who doesn’t know what they’re looking for and the nightshift name was used for the idea to use at night, which I found was appropriate. This isn’t for an enthusiast nor is it “the people’s weed” as noted on the Kingsway website as I found other cultivars at a lower price more worthy.

L.A. Confidential by Aurora Cannabis was $10.50 a gram on OCS with taxes previously so I’m happy to see the price is lower here but on Twitter it is said Daily Special Indica is L.A. Confidential or sometimes MK Ultra by the same grower, which I’d prefer as the cost per gram is $6.27 with taxes.

I won’t be buying this again and wouldn’t recommend paying above the $8 per gram price.

Cannabis: Strawberry Fire OG by Gage Cannabis

GAGE CANNABIS BRINGS THE FIRE

This is my first review of a Gage Cannabis product that is grown by Radicle Cannabis Inc out in Hamilton, Ontario. This was bought from the Ontario Cannabis Store but can also be purchased on the medical side distributed by Spectrum Therapeutics under the Radicle brand at the time of this writing. The lineage here is Strawberry Cough crossed with Fire OG.

Cannabinoid Content and Terpenes

THC content was a bit different on this container compared to previous reviews and showed 223.1 mg/g of THC. For those who prefer this in percent form, this would be 22.31% THC. This was due to a labeling change in regulations which originally was for pre-rolls and has moved onto whole flower. Noted was zero mg of CBD or 0% CBD.

Terpene and other cannabinoid data was minimal on the Ontario Cannabis Store website and noted the four mentioned, Pinene, Limonene, Myrcene and Ocimene.

Strawberry Fire OG, Gage Cannabis, VapeTheBud

Price, Shipping and Pack Dates

The price was $11.63 per gram with taxes on the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) for a container with 3.5 grams, costing a total of $40.70. Shipping was free with Canada Post or 3-day delivery due to the current COVID-19 outbreak, otherwise it would’ve been $5 plus tax.

This was packaged on April 1st 2020 and was purchased on April 28th 2020. I received the container on May 1st and opened and started consuming it a day later, which means this was packaged for 32 days.  Harvest date remains unknown.

Smell, Taste and Appearance

At waist height I could smell the sweet, earthy fruit aromas, and when vaped it tasted like a bit of a grapefruit. It had perfect moisture content and was ready to vape, no need for a humidity pack like most cannabis I’ve tried.

Strawberry Fire OG has some really nice colouring to it with bright orange pistils, heavy amounts of trichomes glittering along the flower and under the macro lens a nice display of the trichome formations.

Strawberry Fire OG, Gage Cannabis, VapeTheBud

Consumption Methods

With every review I’ve ever done I try a minimum of six temperatures, each are individual sessions to see how long each lasts. This may vary by each device and the one used here was the Mighty vaporizer.

My ideal temperature used was around 185 degrees Celsius (365F) to capture the most flavour and while enjoying the vapour output. At slightly higher temperatures the flavour was less noticeable but still provided lots of vapour.

170C (338F) – 10 minutes
175C (347F) – 10 minutes
180C (356F) – 9 minutes
185C (365F) – 9 minutes – Increased vapour
190C (374F) – 7 minutes – Flavour less noticeable
195C (383F) – 7 minutes

Rolled into a gram and smoked as a joint I found the ash was mostly a white ash with some very light grey hues in some areas. The smoke was smooth and would enjoy it in this form again.

Subjective Effects

Really enjoyed it effect wise with an improved mood and something I’d enjoy smoking with a group of friends. Had some good laughs to the point of putting things in the fridge that shouldn’t be going in there, but quickly realizing it in the moment.

Dry eyes seem to be a common issue for me with this one, doesn’t happen too often anymore but this got me. Duration of effects was around 90 minutes and I preferred to use it when I didn’t feel like doing much and wanted to relax, this would help in the daytime or nighttime, situation permitting.

Final Thoughts

I would buy this again despite the price being close to $12 a gram, the quality lives up to what others have said. I do advise others to take caution if they are new to cannabis as it might be too strong for some, even for myself I found one session was good enough.
